NSW RMS: Mobility Scooter use
Safe use of mobility scooters
Mobility scooters are a great way for people with limited mobility to stay independent and get to everyday places, such as the local shops or appointments. When using a mobility scooter, it’s important to follow the same road rules that apply to pedestrians. Always ride on the footpath at walking speed (around 2–3km/h) and cross roads safely at traffic lights or pedestrian crossings.
NSW road rules for mobility scooters
-
Mobility scooters must not travel faster than 10km/h
-
You don’t need a NSW driver licence to operate one
-
Mobility scooter users are considered pedestrians under the law
Safe riding tips
Slow down before turning
Always reduce your speed before turning. Taking corners too quickly can cause your scooter to tip or lose balance.
Avoid steep hills
Try to stay on level ground whenever possible. Going uphill drains your battery faster, and travelling downhill can strain your brakes. Avoid turning while on a slope, as this increases the risk of toppling.
Be visible
Make sure others can see you. Attach a safety flag and wear bright or reflective clothing so that both pedestrians and drivers are aware of your presence.
Cross driveways carefully
Driveways can be dangerous spots, especially if drivers haven’t seen you. Always slow down, look and listen for cars before crossing.
Use baskets or racks for carrying items
Avoid placing bags or packages on your lap, as this can affect your balance and control. Always use a basket or rear rack instead.
Health and safety considerations
Your ability to operate a mobility scooter safely can be affected by your health or medications. Check with your doctor before riding to ensure you have the physical ability and awareness to use your scooter safely.
Basic skills you’ll need
Strength – To grip and steer the handlebars securely.
Balance – To stay steady on uneven ground or when travelling downhill.
Coordination – To manage the accelerator and brake smoothly while steering.
Good eyesight – To clearly see obstacles, people and vehicles.
Perception – To judge speed and distance accurately, helping avoid collisions.
