Types of scooter batteries
There are three main types of scooter batteries (four if you include lithium). While lithium batteries are available, they’re quite expensive — often over $1000 each.
Wet cell batteries
These are similar to car batteries and typically last 12 to 18 months.
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries
AGM batteries can last up to two years, but if their charge drops below 50%, their lifespan shortens quickly.
Gel batteries
Gel batteries are the most durable of the three, lasting up to three years when properly maintained.
Charging tips
Proper charging is key to getting the best performance and lifespan out of your batteries.
-
Never use a wet or automotive charger on gel or AGM batteries — their output voltage is too high.
-
Gel and AGM batteries do not suffer from “memory effect,” so frequent charging won’t harm them.
-
Recharge after every use and ideally leave your charger connected overnight (or even continuously). The chargers are designed for this.
-
Recharge before use whenever possible.
-
Remember, depth of discharge affects battery life. The harder a battery works, the shorter its lifespan — so larger batteries often last longer.
-
Avoid completely draining your batteries (“ultra-deep discharges”), as this will shorten their life.
-
Don’t leave your batteries at a low charge level for long periods. Recharge them fully and store them fully charged.
-
A quick couple of hours on charge between uses is a good habit — it helps keep them topped up and healthy.
